Here is an extensive list of wines to try, limited to wines made from a single variety of grape. I'll be continuously checking them off and commenting on them. It's more interesting and educational to taste wine when you know what flavours to look for. You can read more about wine flavours in this article. Albarño SP
This is a white wine with the taste of exotic fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Like a dry Riesling. Clearly White. Fruit, I guess. Heavy flavour.
Assyrtiko GR
This is a white wine with the taste of exotic fruit, but no earth or wood flavors. I liked it. Hard to distinguish fruit. Pineapple? Sweet. Citrus. Lot of taste, but not sharp or round.
Barbera IT
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Smooth. Barely any alcohol taste. Airy. A bit spicy or citrusy.
Cabernet (Sauvignon) US
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, french oak, but no earth flavors. Strong alcohol. A typical red wine, but I suppose one of the better ones. Sharp but blunted, in a good way. Raisins.
Cabernet (Sauvignon) FR IT SP
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, french oak and earth flavors. Like Bourdaux. Fullbodied. Alcohol comes through. Fruity. Not much to say about it.
Cabernet (Sauvignon) SA AU
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, american oak, but no earth flavors. Similar to the Shiraz (AU) but dryer. Some sweetness.
Cabernet Franc FR IT
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, french oak and earth flavors. Sweet. Thick. Fortified, like a Tawny Port. Bright but not extremely.
Chardonnay US AU
This is a white wine with the taste of exotic fruit, but no earth or wood flavors. You have to asked for the unoaked kind. Nice. Little different. Alcohol comes through. No sugar but feels sweet anyway. Not dry either. Has a depth.
Chardonnay FR
This is a white wine with the taste of subtle fruit, oak and rich earth flavors. I tried an expensive one. You can tell it’s fancy. It’s almost fizzy. Sweet and balanced. Mature.
Chardonnay US AU NZ CL AR
This is a white wine with the taste of exotic fruit, oak, but no earth flavors. Rich, fruity. Strong, sharp, bad, couldn’t distinguish anything but citrus. Said to be a classic.
Dolcetto IT
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Dry, typical red wine. Very fruity. Wouldn’t drink again.
Gamay FR
This is a red wine with the taste of red fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Like Beaujolais. Sweet, with a tangy aftertaste. Light, but not watery. Pretty good. Spicy.
Gewürztraminer
This is a white wine with the taste of exotic fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Had one from Alsace in France. Light. Wow! Buttery and pricot flavours.
Grenache FR SP
This is a red wine with the taste of red fruit, french oak and earth flavors. Very typical. Alcohol comes through clearly. Kind of dry. Fruity. Little watery. A bit of cardboard.
Grenache/Granacha and Syrah and Carignan and possible Cabernet (Sauvignon) SP
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, american oak and earth flavors. Very balanced. Predominantly strong alcohol. Then a little sweet a little dry and a little watery.
Malbec AR
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, french oak, but no earth flavors. Strong alcohol. A lot of berry flavour. Almost sour taste. A bit dry. Not sweet.
Malbec FR
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Like Cahors. Similar to the Shiraz (AU) but dryer. Some sweetness.
Marsanne and Roussanne FR
This is a white wine with the taste of exotic fruit, oak and earth flavors. Thick. Buttery. Only a little sweet but not dry either. Not bad but wouldn’t drink again. Alcohol definitely comes through.
Merlot US CL
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, french oak, but no earth flavors. Definately wine; what you'd expect of a dark, deep wine. Definately black fruit, but don't taste the wood. In fact I'd almost say it had a slight metallic taste, or maybe that just a sharpness. I's say typical, good if you like wine.
Merlot FR
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, french oak and earth flavors. Similar to Bourdaux. A bit yeasty. Watery, but not in a bad way. Easy to drink.
Nebbiolo
This is a red wine with the taste of red fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Like Barollo and Barbaresso. Hit with a sweetness that fades quickly. Earthiness gives it an old cellar taste. Interesting.
Nero d'Avola IT
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Sharp. Strong flavour but a bit watery. Plum. A bit of alcohol flavour, not yeasty.
Pinot Blanc and Gris FR
This is a white wine with the taste of exotic fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Very sweet. Fruity. Almost like a soda.
Pinot Grigio (Gris)
This is a white wine with the taste of subtle fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Had a French one. Goes down easy. Sweet and candy-like. Nice. A dark note makes it interesting. Refreshing. Not sharp. But alcohol comes through.
Pinot Noir FR
This is a red wine with the taste of red fruit, french oak and earth flavors. Not dry, hard find flavours. Clearly red fruits.
Pinot Noir US AU NZ AR
This is a red wine with the taste of red fruit, french oak, but no earth flavors. Very dark. Berries. Almost Smokey. Lots of oak. Alcohol comes through.
Pinotage SA
This is a red wine with the taste of red fruit, french oak, but no earth flavors. South Africa. Sour and pretty dry. Leathery.
Riesling FR GR AT
This is a white wine with the taste of exotic fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Very sweet, fresh and spicy. Slight sting, but barely any alcohol taste. Could drink again.
Riesling AU NZ US
This is a white wine with the taste of exotic fruit, but no earth or wood flavors. Wow, sweet. Citrusy. Fruity. Spicy.
Sangiovese IT
This is a red wine with the taste of red fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Like Chianti and Brunello. Light, airy, dry, alcoholic. Grown-up drink. Not sweet.
Sauvignon Blanc US NZ SA
This is a white wine with the taste of subtle fruit, but no earth or wood flavors. Citrusy. Steel barrels and it shows. Maybe some passion fruit. Almost tasty. Definitely refreshing.
Sauvignon Blanc FR
This is a white wine with the taste of subtle fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Hard to detect the fruit. Slightly sharp. Not sweet at all. Not dry. Maybe a bit metallic, that must be the earth. Supposed to have a hint of cat pee?
Soave/Finao Falanghina and Treir Cousins IT
This is a white wine with the taste of exotic fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Strong taste. Citrusy. Sweet. Moderate alcohol. Refreshing.
Syrah FR
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, french oak and earth flavors. Kinda like it. Not watery. Peppery. Dark berries. Alcohol comes through. Expensive.
Syrah US
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, french oak, but no earth flavors. Intense. Hint of Smokiness. Very alcoholic. Flavorful but not thick; light. Sweet. Not bad.
Syrah/Shiraz AU NZ
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, american oak, but no earth flavors. Similar to the Malbec (FR) but not dry. Some sweetness.
Sémillon
This is a white wine with the taste of subtle fruit, oak and floral earth flavors. Watery and a bit dry. What stood out was the dough flavour and especially aroma. It was higher on the interesting-scale than tasty-scale.
Tempranillo and Grenache/Garnacha SP
This is a red wine with the taste of red fruit, american oak and earth flavors. Like Rioja. Sweet. Watery. Leathery. Grapey.
Valpolicella and Amarone IT
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Intense, dark, flowery, meh.
Zinfandel US
This is a red wine with the taste of red fruit, american oak, but no earth flavors. Light and airy, but very typical. Little dry.
Carmeneae CL
This is a red wine with the taste of black fruit, french oak, but no earth flavors.
Chenin Blanc FR
This is a white wine with the taste of subtle fruit, earth, but no oak flavors. Apple taste. Haven't tried it yet.
